Background:
The prints shown on this page are based on
illustrations by the English children's artist Kate Greenaway. They are from a
reader using an Apple Pie theme to teach the alphabet.
Greenaway, born in London in 1846, lived and
practiced her craft in the suburb of Frognal until her death in 1901. Along with
Walter Crane and Randolph Caldecott, Greenaway helped to change the face of children's
books in Victorian England.
We also feature on our site prints from two
other Greenaway series The
Language of Flowers and Book
of Games.
