Background:

These hand-colored Equestrian prints are by Henry Alken (1785-1851), well-known British sports illustrator of the early 1800s.  Alken was both artist and engraver for this series.  While Alken illustrated numerous types of British sporting activities during his career, here he focuses on capturing whimsical scenes of both the gentry and common folk riding around London.
