About Victor Levasseur

Victor Levasseur was a French cartographer who produced a number of Atlases in the
mid to late-1800s.  The World maps shown here are from one of his best know works -
the Illustrated National Atlas.  In addition to portraying major continents of the world, the Atlas
also included maps with the geography of each French département (administrative regions) and
overseas French territories.

The maps are notable for their detail and presentation.  Surrounding the maps are vignettes
portraying people of interest, trade and commerce, geographical features, flora and fauna and other points of
interest.  The text provides Statistics on each of the regions, including the population as of
the time the Atlas was published.  According to the North American map shown here, the
population of the United States in 1861 was 19,000,000 people, with the population
of Texas at 200,000!
