Background:
In the mid-1800s Samuel Sloan (1815-1884), a Philadelphia architect, published the first
edition of his Model Architecture series. Intended as a reference for
architects and builders, the series portrayed a variety of designs including homes,
mansions, school houses, churches, etc. For each design plates were included
presenting illustrations, floor plans and architectural details. The architectural
drawings are by Sloan, and the lithography by P. S. Duvall. The Model Architect
is one of the most influential architecture books in America in the second half of the
1800s.
