Background:
These beautiful Art Deco Fashion prints are from
the Parisian magazine Art-Goût-Beauté (Art, Good Taste and Beauty) published in
the 1920s and 1930s. They uniquely capture the spirit of the Art Deco era in both
the fashions portrayed and artistic rendering.
The series presented here include fashions by
leading designers of the day, fashion accessories and advertisements for clothing
manufacturers. A number of the ads are from the firm of André Gillier, named after
it's founder and president. Gillier was the largest French knitwear manufacturing
firm at the time, and teamed with René Lacoste to found La Chemise Lacoste in 1933 (today
best known for their alligator emblazoned apparel).
The Fashion prints were produced through the
pochoir technique, a method of hand-coloring using stencils similar to today's silk screen
process.
