These detailed prints are from an encyclopedia of sciences, arts and mechanics
- Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des métiers et des
arts (Encyclopedia, or a Systematic Dictionary of Science, Arts and the Trades).
Edited by the French philosopher Denis Diderot (1713-1784) and Jean Le Rond
d'Alembert and published between 1751 and 1772, the encyclopedia comprised aver 2000
detailed plates depicting artistic, scientific and technical achievements.
The prints shown here portray the steps in
manufacturing Bells including the preparation of the Mold, plans for the Furnace to cast
the Bell, and the construction of Belfry tower.
We include with each print a copy of the
accompanying encyclopedia text (in French) with a description of the plate.
