Background:
These early 1830s hand colored Bird
prints from France appeared in the "new" edition of Georges
Buffon's (1707-1788) monumental work on Natural History originally published
between 1749 and 1789, The series included descriptions of Birds, Mammals and
Geology as well as other natural history subjects.
Contributing to the "new" edition was
another French naturalist, Frederic Cuvier (1773-1838). The engravings for the
prints were produced by the French printing firm Pauquet Frères.
Included on this page are prints
of Gamebirds, Birds of Prey, Songbirds,
Tropical birds, Shore birds.
