Background:
The hand-colored Bird engravings shown on this page are from a folio published by George
Graves in the early 1800s presenting "the history, with coloured representation, of
every known species of British birds". The series is titled British
Ornithology.
The accompanying text provides both a general description and characteristics of
each species. A variety of songbirds, waterfowl, gamebirds and birds of prey are
portrayed in these prints.
Graves, a fellow of the Linnean Society, also
authored numerous other natural history texts.
