Background:
On this page we feature a new selection of British Bird prints based on
paintings by Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935), one of the most respected
ornithological artists in Britain in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The prints
shown here include a selection of Water Fowl, Birds of Prey and Songbirds from the First
Edition of his series British Birds published in 1915.
Scottish-born, Thorburn was an acute observer of
nature and his style of watercolor painting actively portrays the subjects in their
natural habitat. He learned many of his painting techniques from his father, Robert
Thorburn, a miniaturist to Queen Victoria.
Each Bird print is accompanied
by the text pages, also authored by Thorburn, describing the species of birds portrayed.
