Background:
These beautiful prints are from the First Edition of Robert Thompson's "Gardener's
Assistant", one of the best known gardening references in England in the second half
of the 1800s. The reference is described as "A guide to the formation and
management of the Kitchen, Fruit and Flower Garden". The illustrations are by
Mrs. Augusta Withers, designated as the "Flower Painter in Ordinary to Queen
Adelaide". In addition to her skill as a botanical illustrator, she was equally
at ease in drawing poultry and game.
