Background:

These sports vignettes are from The Sporting Magazine.  This monthly British magazine, published in the first half of the 1800s, featured fictional and non-fictional stories on sporting activities on "the turf, the chase, and every other diversion interesting to the men of pleasure, enterprise and spirit".  Also included were racing schedules and monthly climatological calendars of interest to the sportsman.
