Background:

These colorful prints are from a general reference on Canary and Cagebirds published by Cassell and Company in the late 1800s. The illustrations are by Joseph Ludlow (1840-1916). Ludlow was a prolific illustrator of birds with his best know work being The Illustrated Book of Poultry. As with many Cassell color prints, the Canaries and Cagebirds are placed in a natural setting.
