Background:
The brilliantly colored Children's Song prints shown here are based on illustrations by
the French artist Guy Arnoux (1886-1951). The prints are based on songs from the
16th and 17th century.
Arnoux, a prolific wartime artist and
illustrator, was born into a military family. Military and patriotism are familiar
themes of the nearly eighty books he illustrated. In particular, he was very
interested in decorative art designs for ships and in 1921 was appointed official painter
of the French Navy.
In addition to illustrating books, his designs
also appeared on posters, gameboards, menus, fans, scarves and even shoes.
Many of Arnoux's illustrations were reproduced
through the pochoir process, a method of print making using stencils and hand-coloring
(similar to today's silk screening).
Each print is provided with the accompanying
song sheet showing the musical notation and verse. |
