Background:
These city maps are from a series of travel guides published in England from the late
1800s through early 1900s. The volume which featured these maps focused on the
United States.
The maps present an extraordinary level of
detail considering their size - a tribute to both the graphic design and quality of
printing used to produce them. Streets are clearly labeled, as are government
buildings, churches, museums, parks, train stations, and other major points of interest.
They truly are a snapshot of major American
cities at the beginning of the 19th century.
