Background:

These engravings are from the final installment of the "Illustrated" series of European landscapes based on the travels of the English physician William Beattie over a period of 10 years.  The engravings are based on drawings by William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854), who used sketches by the German artist M. Abresch as the basis for his works.   According the Dr. Beattie, the series captured the spirit of the history and topography of scenes along the Danube River.

The first installment in the "Illustrated" series featured Switzerland.   Engravings from this series can be found on our Web site.
