Background:
These charming children's prints are from a late 1800s series titled Father Goose
based loosely on the verse and pictures found in the Mother Goose stories.
The verses were authored by L. Frank Baum (1856-1919), an American children's author.
During his lifetime he authored over 55 novels and is best known for The
Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
The illustrations are by W. W. (William Wallace)
Denslow (1856-1915). Denslow was an editorial cartoonist with a strong interest in
politics, and a close collaborator of Baum's in illustrating a number of his works.
In paying tribute to the Mother Goose stories,
the author and illustrator note in the introduction "These are newer jingles and
pictures for children of to-day, and intended solely to supplement the nursery rhymes of
our ancestors."
