Background:
These prints portray a variety of artificial fishing flies designed by Charles F. Orvis,
founder of the purveyor of outdoor supplies bearing his name. The prints were part
of a folio written by his daughter, Mary, originally published in 1892. The
accompanying text describes the origins and use of each of the flies (e.g. Trout Fishing,
Salmon Fishing, Bass Fishing, etc).
Each print is provided with the text identifying
the name of each fly. On this page we specify the name of the first fly shown (upper
left corner of the print). As noted in the introduction to this series, in many
instances the naming of artificial flies follows the classification of insects.
