Background:
These prints are from a folio of illustrations of French Cathedrals published in the early
1800s. They feature the drawings of the architect R. Garland which were subsequently
engraved by B. Winkles. The folio focused on "a selection ... from the most
celebrated of such Cathedrals" from the 133 dioceses which comprised the 18
ecclesiastical provinces of France.
The prints shown on this page portray the
Cathedral of Our Lady of Amiens. Built between 1220 and 1270 it is located in
Amiens, the administrative capital of the Picardy region of France. As noted
in Wikipedia "Amiens is the tallest complete cathedral in France, its stone-vaulted
nave reaching an internal height of 138.8 feet. It also has the greatest interior
volume of any French cathedral."
