Background:
These prints are from a folio of illustrations of French Cathedrals published in the early
1800s. They feature the drawings of the architect R. Garland which were subsequently
engraved by B. Winkles. The folio focused on "a selection ... from the most
celebrated of such Cathedrals" from the 133 dioceses which comprised the 18
ecclesiastical provinces of France.
The prints shown on this page portray the
Cathedral of St. Peter of Beauvais, an incomplete Roman Catholic Cathedral located in
Beauvais in northern France. As noted in Wikipedia "It is, in some respects,
the most daring achievement of Gothic architecture, and consists only of a transept
(sixteenth century) and choir, with apse and seven polygonal apsidal chapels (thirteenth
century), which are reached by an ambulatory." |
