Background:
These delightful prints are from the Funny Little Book, illustrated (and authored) by
Johnny Gruelle (b. 1880). He was a gifted artist specializing in children's
stories and prints, and is best known as the creator of the Raggedy Ann
character. Much of the inspiration for his work came from stories he would tell
his daughter Marcella to keep her spirits up while she was battling smallpox.
Gruelle's philosophy in children's stories was very simple - to emphasize love, caring,
sharing and respect for others - lessons as valid today as they were then.
