Background:
These unique prints are from Jean Grandville's series Carte vivante du Restaurateur (You
Are What You Eat). Originally published in the early 1830s, these color lithographs
are from a folio printed for the French pharmaceutical company Laboratoires Robert et
Carriére as a gift for clients in the mid 1900s.
The prints feature the art of caricatures that
Grandville brought to some of his later works including Les Fleurs Animees and Metamorphoses. In this series,
patrons at a restaurant are depicted with a semblance to the food they are eating.
