Background:
The unusual prints featured on this page are another example of the creative genius of the
French satirical cartoonist Jean Grandville (born Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard). In
this series, Grandville portrays animals in the guise of people in a variety of settings
commenting on social, political and cultural issues of the day. Other works of
Grandville featured on our site include Les Fleurs Animees
(The Animated Flowers) and Les Etoilles (The Stars).
Grandville received his artistic training from his Father, a painter of miniatures.
