Background:
Berta Hummel (1909-1946) - German artist and nun - is known for her charming and innocent
illustrations of children at play and exploring nature. Born in Munich, she studied
art at the city's Art Academy. While she received much acclaim from her professors
for her artistic talent, she decided to devote her life to religious causes and entered
the Franciscan Covenant in Germany in 1934.
She chose the name Sister Mary Innocence, though
was frequently called "Sister Hummel". The Mother Superior of the covenant
recognized her unique gifts and provided every opportunity for Sister Hummel to develop
her talents. Most of her drawings were done in her favorite media of charcoal or
pastel crayons.
The prints selected for this page feature Sister
Hummel's drawings with Christmas and Angel themes .
