Background:
The colorful Mammal chromolithograph prints shown here are from a late 1800s
natural history series published in the United States titled Our Living World.
The series attempted to introduce the reader to animals found throughout the world,
while carefully avoiding "the technical language of scientific zoology."
The publishers note the Mammal prints are drawn
with "scientific accuracy". The chromolithographs were printed by Prang
and Company of Boston. Born in Germany, Louis Prang is regarded as the driving force
behind the popularity of chromolithography in the United States in the late 1800s and
early 1900s.
