Background:
The hand-colored Maps of the World, Europe and Asia on this page are very typical of the
"historical" type atlas produced in England in the 1800s. In addition to
portraying the geography of a region, the maps are produced at different times in history
showing the changing boundaries of countries and empires, the rise and fall of cities and
routes of "great voyages of discovery".
The level of detail is extraordinary - Plate 7
includes an inset of Jerusalem highlighting many points of interest (Church of the Holy
Sepulchre, Gate of David, Palace of the Templars).
