Background:
Some of our favorite New Yorker magazine covers are those published around the Christmas
holiday. The themes range from the whimsical - Santa dictating his gift list (December 11,
1948) - to the hectic pace of the season - waiting to check in for a flight back home
(December 16, 1974).
The spirit of Christmas is captured in the City, the Country and even at the Train
station. And as the December 9, 1985 cover shows "not a creature was
stirring"!
The Holiday covers shown here date from the 1940s through the 1990s and feature
some of the best know New Yorker cover artists - Mary Petty, Ilonka Karasz, William
Cotton, Charles Martin, Charles Addams, Charles Saxon, William Steig, Arthur Getz, Iris
Van Rynbach and Perry Barlow.
Enjoy this unique view of the Holidays!
