Background:
These Orchid prints are from volumes of The Botanical Register published from
1828 to 1834. The Register was founded by Sydenham Edwards in 1815 to
promote an understanding of ornamental flowers cultivated in British gardens, though
originally found in overseas countries.
Edwards, who had been one of the original
botanical artists for Curtis's Botanical Magazine, also did illustrations for The
Register along with other English botanical artists of the early 1800s including Miss
S. A. Drake and John Lindley. The Register was published through 1847.
