Background:
These unique prints are from a rare series on the History of the Palms published
in England in the mid 1800s. The series was authored by the German-born botanist
Berthold Seemann (1825-1871). Seemann studied botany and worked at the Royal Botanic
Gardens at Kew. On the recommendation of Sir W J Hooker he was appointed naturalist
for the expedition to the American West and Pacific on the HMS Herald (1847-1851).
The prints are notable in that they portray the
Palms in their natural settings, versus being only botanical illustrations. The
chromolithographs are based on illustrations by M. J. Frank and adopted from the works of
other leading botanical artists of the day.
The Palms that are shown are native to the
Southern United States, South America, India and the Pacific. All are identified by
their Latin names.
