Background:
These color prints, based on photographs, are from a souvenir booklet sold on board trains
of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railway in the early 1900s. They feature
feature views of the Rocky Mountains the traveler would see on the journey. Many of
the prints feature railroad-related views - trains, stations, tracks, bridges.
The booklet served as a guide for the traveler
explaining points of interest. For example, here is part of the narrative for Castle
Rock:
"Thirty-three miles from Denver, the tourist will observe, to the left,
beautiful Castle Rock, one of Colorado's landmarks in the
days of
the old wagon trains across the prairies, before the time
of the
steam roads."
All prints are provided with a copy of the
accompanying text page and map showing the route of the Denver and Rio Grande. |
