Background:
These beautiful engravings are from an early 1800s English guide to "dogs used in the
sports of the field". The accompanying text provided a "comprehensive,
historical and systematic description of the different species, with a review of the
various diseases to which they are subject, and the most approved and efficacious modes of
treatment and cure".
The prints are based on paintings by the British
artist Philip Reinagle (1749-1833) who specialized in sporting themes.
This series is regarded as extremely important
in the field of canine reference works of the 1800s. |
