Background:

These engraved prints of the scenery of Switzerland are based on drawings by William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854). Bartlett accompanied Edinburgh physician and author William Beattie (1793-1875) during extensive travels through Europe. It is interesting to note that as his sketches were completed they were sent back to England to begin the engraving process from which these prints were produced. The prints became part of a 19th century travel guide to Switzerland and are regarded as some of Bartlett's best works.
