Background:
These colorful prints of Trees are based on illustrations by Walter Hood Fitch, the well
known British botanical artist in the first half of the 1800s. His training as a
landscape painter is evident in these prints which feature Trees in natural settings in
the areas of Kew and Windsor.
The prints were part of a folio describing each
variety of Tree using both botanical narratives and poetry. Following is an example
of the verse included with the description for the Willow:
"Willows to
panting shepherds shade dispense,
To bees their honey, and to corn defence." - Virgil |
