Background:
These delightful prints are from Common Wayside Flowers, published in England in
the second half of the 1800s. Each print features a lovely illustration by Birkett
Foster with an accompanying poem about the flower by Thomas Miller. Miller, a
basket-maker by profession, wrote an enormous amount of verse published in periodicals,
gift books and individual books. While apprenticed as an engraver, Foster is known for the
quality of his drawings done directly on the wood blocks from which the prints were
produced.
