Background:
This series of wilderness animal prints is based on paintings by the American artist Edwin
Deming (1860-1942). Working both on canvas and as a sculptor, Deming is best known
for his depiction of Native Americans and wildlife. He received his artistic
training at the Art Students League and then a year in Paris studying at the Académie
Julian.
Deming spent time with the Apache and Pueblo
Indians in the American Southwest during the late 1800s. During this time he saw
much of the wildlife which he captured on canvas and which was later reproduced as the
color prints shown here.
