Background:

The Tailor of Gloucester was one of Beatrix Potter's earliest stories, and a personal favorite of hers.  Originally written for a friend as a Christmas gift in 1901, the First Edition was published in 1903.  The prints presented here are from that edition.

The story is about a tailor who needed to complete an elaborate waistcoat for a grand mayoral occasion.  Falling ill, he thought he would be unable to complete this commission ontime - until a team of mice living in his shop took up the job and almost completed the waistcoat except for one cherry-colored buttonhole as there was "No More Twist".  Simpkin, the tailor's cat, did try to help by shopping for fabric and looking after the tailor when he was ill.  Too bad we can't train our pet's to help us complete work when we're ill!
