Background:

The antique hand-colored Bird prints shown on this page are from a rare edition of The Book of Birds published in England in 1841 by the London firm of Robert Tyas and Company.

The series was edited by the naturalist Achille Comte and based on the French naturalist Georges Buffon's work on Natural History originally published between 1749 and 1789.

The illustrations are by Victor Adam.
