Background:
These unique hand-colored engraved prints are from Dictionary of Natural History and
Phenomena authored by the French entomologist Félix Guérin-Méneville (1799-1874).
In addition to his entomology work and authoring other natural history texts,
Guérin was elected president of the Société entomologique de France for the year 1846.
The prints are noteworthy for a number of
reasons. The subject of Guérin's work spanned both the animate (Birds, Fish,
Plants) and inanimate (Geology) fields of Natural History. On many plates there are
combinations of more than one subject matter. The subjects are usually placed in
natural settings (versus many natural history prints of the period that just featured the
subject). And the detail is extraordinary - look at the Placama print (Plate 579) to
spot the pink Flamigoes in the background!
Most of the prints are based on illustrations by
Adolph Fries.
